About Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga, as it is taught by Sri
K. Pattabhi Jois, is an actual practice of the eight
limbs of yoga as described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra.
We start with the Asana, the third limb, and the other limbs
will develop as the practice is established. Astanga Vinyasa
Yoga is a dynamic and challenging form of yoga with a synchronisation
of breath and movement. It is characterised by using the same
series of positions every time which leads to improved body
consciousness and a calm mind. With the use of controlled breath
and body locks in moving from position to position an internal
heat is created. This heat will make you sweat, it is cleansing
for joints, muscles and internal organs, but most of all will
give you a great sense of well being.
The first series is called the Primary Series
and is designed to strengthen, align and open our body and
mind.
Ashtanga Yoga requires an effort, but the resulting effect
with regular practice is a supple, light, strong body.
